Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red shared a sequel to its February security breach that said internal data is now circulating online. The company was the victim of a cyber attack in early February in which the attacker gained access to the internal network and gathered some data belonging to the CD Projekt capital group. The attacker also left a ransomware notice. Now it looks like the damage is worse than the developers originally thought.
In February, CD Projekt Red tweeted that an unknown actor had gained access to its internal network and stole some data from the CD Projekt capital group. At the time, the company said it would neither give in to the demands nor negotiate with the attacker, regardless of whether the data was published online. It began with restoring the data and securing its IT infrastructure. Now CD Projekt Red announced in another tweet that it had learned that the internal data was being disseminated online, or rather that there was reason to believe.
While the developer of Cyberpunk 2077 is unsure of the exact content of the data, he believed current / former employee details as well as data on his games could be part of it. “In addition, we can not confirm whether the data concerned was manipulated or tampered with after the breach,” it said. The company also states that it will do everything in its power to protect the privacy of employees and affected parties. “We are determined and ready to take action against parties who share the data in question,” it said.
CD Projekt Red is working with the General Police Headquarters of Poland along with other appropriate services, experts and law enforcement agencies to find a solution to this problem. Several steps have been taken to prevent this from happening again. It has implemented next generation firewalls with advanced anti-malware protection, installed new mechanisms to protect servers, expanded its internal security department and much more.
The first attack caused delays in CD Projekt Red’s timeline for updates and DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077. How this new development will affect the future of games remains to be seen.
